Industry Example for Personnel Tracking and OH&S Monitoring
in the Exploration Industry
ABC Explorations is an exploration company that provides services to operators in the Mining and Oil & Gas industries.
With around 100 staff who provide geo-science services in
remote areas, ABC has approximately 50-60 staff working in remote areas, alone or in small teams, at any given time.
To ensure they meet their OH&S obligations, ABC operates a system whereby their remote staff call in to headquarters at fixed times of the day. Known as “skeds”, these scheduled check ins are loaded into a register, and in the event that a sked is missed by a remote worker, ABC puts in place their emergency response plan.
The problem is there are so many skeds that ABC has to spread then right across the day, so if someone does not report their sked late in the day, they may in fact have been in trouble much earlier.
This is expensive and difficult for ABC to manage. Firstly they have to manage and maintain a large fleet of expensive radio and satellite phone equipment, but more importantly, since they are using a manual call in system, they have staff dedicated to “manning the phones” for much of the day. They have to spend almost all of their time dealing with non events, and because the schedule has to spread so far across the day it can be confusing as to whether there was actually a sked.
The team at ABC need a more efficient solution!
Enter TracerTrak – the new Personnel Monitoring system from Pivotel, Australia’s leading Mobile Satellite Service provider.
TracerTrak has been integrated with the SPOT Satellite Messenger to deliver Enterprise Grade OH&S functionality for remote workers.
At the push of a button ABC’s remote or lone workers can send their sked, including their exact GPS Location from the field. The sked is delivered across a commercial satellite communications network from anywhere across Australia, New Zealand and most of the world. Since the skeds are no longer coming by radio or phone, there is no need to have staff back at Headquarters spending all day answering the calls. The TracerTrak system monitors the skeds at the appropriate time and send “missed-sked” alerts by e-mail or SMS to ABC’s response team.
Users in the field also have the option of pushing the SOS button for immediate emergency response or the Help button for less critical assistance.
ABC users back at headquarters can now logon to TracerTrak and pinpoint the last location for the remote worker and dispatch appropriate help immediately.
TracerTrak can even muster the Emergency Services to respond if that is the customers’ requirement.
Since TracerTrak is now handling the skeds instead of staff, ABC is able to increase their schedule from two skeds a day to four, improving response times and increasing worker safety.
You would be amazed how cost effective this was for ABC Exploration. At under $250 upfront investment and under $30 per month per device, TracerTrak costs a fraction of the solution ABC was using before.
By using TracerTrak, ABC Exploration has:
- Increased worker safety.
- Improved response times.
- Released staff from the arduous task of receiving manual skeds.
- Saved significant ongoing costs.
